As juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a diagnosis of exclusion, each child who presents with signs or symptoms suggesting this disease must undergo a complete clinical evaluation, which should include a careful family and personal history, inquiry into recent pathologic events (namely a trauma, pharyngitis, or gastrointestinal infection), and a thorough physical examination.
