medwireNews: EULAR and the Renal Association–European Dialysis and Transplant Association (ERA–EDTA) have issued updated recommendations for the management of lupus nephritis (LN).

These recommendations were “developed by a large group of physicians from different specialties and nurses caring for LN, with input from patients, and complement the recently updated recommendations for SLE,” say the authors, led by Dimitrios Boumpas (“Attikon” University Hospital, Athens, Greece).

Boumpas and team note that the previous iteration of the LN guidelines was published in 2012, and “[s]ince then, new evidence has emerged, which includes the use of calcineurin inhibitors (CNIs) and ‘multitarget’ therapy, disease monitoring and treatment targets.”

Due to the nature of the disease, the authors stress that LN “mandates a multidisciplinary approach by rheumatologists and nephrologists, following histological confirmation and assessment of LN by a nephropathologist,” and recommend patient evaluation and management in centers with LN expertise.

The guidelines are freely available in the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.
