medwireNews: The Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) has issued updated evidence-based recommendations for the nonsurgical treatment of knee, hip, and polyarticular osteoarthritis.
These guidelines, developed through a systematic review and expert consensus process, “have taken a more patient-centered approach than earlier versions by allowing recommendations to be predicated on the distribution of osteoarthritis and various comorbidity profiles,” Raveendhara Bannuru (Tufts Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts, USA) and co-authors write in Osteoarthritis & Cartilage.
In addition to the treatment recommendations, which include education, exercise programs, and drug treatment, the guideline authors developed a treatment algorithm, which they say “has the potential to serve as the blueprint for a personalized, web-based or mobile application that would increase the visibility and accessibility of these guidelines to those who stand to benefit the most from its recommendations.”
