“These two conditions can be confused since they both affect distal joints, although OA is generally not an inflammatory condition,” lead author Dafna Gladman (University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada) told medwireNews .

Dafna Gladman (University of Toronto, Ontario, Canada) and co-investigators say that resolution of enthesitis was associated with improvement in health-related quality of life and functioning, irrespective of treatment group, but dactylitis resolution was associated with more modest improvements.

Dafna Gladman (Toronto Western Hospital, Ontario, Canada) and co-investigators randomly assigned patients to receive treatment with oral tofacitinib at a dose of 5 or 10 mg twice daily for 6 months, or to receive placebo for 3 months followed by tofacitinib 5 mg or 10 mg until month 6.

However, Dafna Gladman (Toronto Western Hospital, Ontario, Canada) and co-researchers note that “the mean change in dactylitis count at week 24 was significant and sustained through 156 weeks in the population of patients continuing treatment.”
