medwireNews: The American College of Rheumatology and the Vasculitis Foundation have issued joint guidelines for the management of various types of vasculitis.

Sharon Chung (University of California, San Francisco, USA) and team developed the guidelines using GRADE methodology, and they provide recommendations on the management of antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA)-associated vasculitis, giant cell arteritis (GCA), Takayasu arteritis, and polyarteritis nodosa.

For ANCA-associated vasculitis, the authors say the recommendations “reflect the evolving management of these diseases,” and cover the role of biologic therapies to reduce glucocorticoid toxicity, while those for GCA and Takayasu arteritis cover “diagnostic testing, treatment, clinical and laboratory monitoring, and surgical intervention.” The majority of recommendations across the different types of vasculitis were designated as conditional, reflecting limited available evidence.

The guidelines are presented as three articles published simultaneously in Arthritis & Rheumatology and Arthritis Care & Research.
